Environment and Climate - Commitment to Sustainable Electronics Production

Environmental and climate responsibility as part of our operations

Muurlan Elektroniikka is committed to reducing its environmental impact at all stages of production and to acting as a responsible partner in the fight against climate change. For us, taking the environment and climate into account is a key part of contract manufacturing of electronics, and we are constantly looking for new ways to improve our environmental friendliness.

Our operations are based on the ISO 14001 environmental certificate, and we follow practices in accordance with it to ensure environmental protection. Our goal is to develop more sustainable production methods that reduce energy consumption, raw material use and waste. Environmental and climate responsibility are long-term commitments for us, and we are introducing new operating models and technologies to ensure that our production is as environmentally friendly as possible.

Our practical ways to reduce our carbon footprint

Muurlan Elektroniikka aims to reduce its carbon footprint through concrete measures covering energy efficiency, waste recycling, material choices and personnel training. With these solutions, we make our production more sustainable and contribute to the achievement of climate goals:

  • Energy efficiency in production facilities: We use LED lighting and energy-efficient equipment, which significantly reduces energy consumption.

  • Waste sorting and reuse of packaging materials: We sort waste efficiently in our production facilities and reuse all suitable packaging materials, such as cardboard and other recyclable materials, thereby reducing the amount of waste ending up in landfills.

  • Sustainable material choices: We prefer more ecological and sustainable material options in all manufacturing stages, which helps reduce environmental impacts and supports sustainable development.

  • Transport and supply chain optimisation: We deliver products centrally and prioritise local suppliers, which reduces emissions from logistics. In addition, we utilise electric vehicles in local transports, which further reduces the carbon footprint of our logistics chain.

  • Reducing travel and virtual meetings: We replace commuting and meetings with virtual meetings whenever possible, reducing the environmental impact of business travel and supporting remote work.

  • Active training on environmental and responsibility issues: Our personnel regularly participates in trainings and events, such as circular economy trainings and responsibility trainings, so that we can adopt the latest sustainable operating models. This ensures that we have up-to-date information to implement environmental responsibility.

  • Water minimisation and consumption reduction practices: Although water consumption is not a significant part of our production, we strive to minimize water use in all daily activities and use water sparingly.

  • Low-emission commuting: We encourage our employees to choose low-emission modes of transport, such as public transport, carpooling and electric cars for their commutes. We support the charging of electric cars at charging points..

  • Environmental training for personnel: Our personnel participate in regular training on energy saving and waste sorting. In this way, our entire team is committed to environmental responsibility and contributes to reducing our company's carbon footprint.

  • Annual environmental targets and monitoring systems: We monitor our carbon footprint and set new targets every year to continuously improve our environmental performance and reduce the impact of our production on the climate.

Compliance with RoHS and REACH requirements

Muurlan Elektroniikka complies with the EU's RoHS and REACH directives to ensure that our products meet environmental standards.

The RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive restricts the use of hazardous substances such as lead and mercury in electronic products, protecting both the environment and users.

The REACH regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals), on the other hand, ensures that the chemicals we use in our manufacturing process are safe and comply with the principles of sustainable development.

By following these standards, we minimize the use of harmful substances and contribute to the protection of the environment and promote safe and responsible production.

The UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) concerning the environment and climate

Muurlan Elektroniikka has adopted the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to guide its operations towards a more responsible and sustainable future. Based on our materiality analysis, we have chosen SDG 9, 12 and 13 as key goals, which support our environmental and climate work. In accordance with these goals, we constantly strive to improve our production processes, reduce our environmental impact and promote innovative, sustainable solutions.

We support the UN's SDG 9 goal by developing environmentally friendly industry and investing in new production technologies. We use energy-efficient soldering methods, such as the vapor phase, and automated quality control solutions (such as AOI and X-ray), which reduce the environmental impact and improve the efficiency of our production processes. We are constantly developing new ways to improve environmental efficiency and sustainable industry.

Muurlan Elektroniikka's UN sustainable development goal 12 responsible consumption and manufacturing

We promote practices in accordance with the UN's SDG 12 goal, which support responsible consumption and production. We comply with the RoHS and REACH regulations, which guide the use of responsible materials in our production. We recycle the waste generated in production and constantly strive to optimize our use of materials to reduce waste. We use circular economy solutions whenever possible, for example by reusing and recycling office furniture, utilizing spare parts from old machines and donating surplus components. In this way, we reduce waste and promote the responsible use of resources.  In addition, our ISO 14001 certification guides our environmental management and sets annual goals to reduce environmental impact.

Muurlan Elektronika's UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 climate action

We support the YKSDG 13 goal on climate action with concrete actions to reduce our carbon footprint and reduce our environmental impact. We are implementing energy efficiency measures, minimizing water consumption and starting a carbon footprint calculation. In addition, we are preparing for future CSRD reporting to ensure transparency in our climate actions. The annual goals according to our ISO 14001 certificate also support the realization of our climate goals.

You can find more information about sustainable development goals and our actions on our responsibility page. We strive to constantly develop our operations and openly communicate our progress, with the aim of reducing climate impacts and promoting the development of responsible industry.

Carbon footprint calculation – Monitoring method for managing environmental impacts

Muurlan Elektroniikka strives to actively monitor and reduce its carbon footprint. We already have partial carbon footprint calculations, and we plan to carry out a full calculation during 2025. This allows us to comprehensively assess the environmental impacts of our production and identify the most important emission reduction targets.

The carbon footprint calculation will cover both direct and indirect emissions, including energy consumption, material procurement, transport and commuting by personnel. With the help of calculations, we set concrete emission reduction targets and monitor their implementation as part of our sustainable development strategy.

Our preparation and commitment to carbon footprint calculation give our customers and stakeholders confidence that we are working towards full environmental responsibility. We believe that carbon footprint calculation helps us take concrete climate actions and reduce the environmental impact of our operations.
